Objective: The student will be introduced to an emergency decent. The student will also be introduced to the aspects to completing the maneuver.

Completion Standards: The student will be able to explain what an emergency decent is, when and why we would use it, and how we would complete it.

Content:

What?

  • Emergency descent is a maneuver for descending as rapidly as possible to a lower altitude or to the ground for an emergency landing.

When and Why?

Results from:

  1. From an uncontrollable fire

  2. A sudden loss of cabin pressurization

  3. or any other situation demanding an immediate and rapid descent

  4. To descend the airplane as soon and as rapidly as possible while not exceeding any structural limitations of the airplane.

How?

Steps to complete an emergency decent:

Example scenario Engine fire in flight

Complete ^ checklist then:

  1. Clear the area

  2. Start maneuver around 4000’

  3. Pick a visual point off the wingtip for a turn to be made

  4. Once a point has been picked

    1. Reduce power

    2. Enter a 30°-45° bank towards your point of reference

    3. Pitch down 12°-15° and 124 kn

  5. Rollout at 90 from when the turn has been initiated

    1. Make shallow S turns to keep a look out for other traffic and objects

  6. Recover no lower that 2000’ from starting altitude

Common Errors:

  • The consequences of failing to identify reason for executing an emergency descent.

  • Improper use of the prescribed emergency checklist to verify accomplishment of procedures for initiating the emergency descent.

  • Improper use of clearing procedures for initiating the emergency descent.

  • Improper procedures for recovering from an emergency descent.
